Big Money: The Top Salaries Of The Software Piracy Watchdogs

By Rob Wright, CRN 3:00 PM EST Wed. Oct. 24, 2012

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) are two of the biggest software piracy watchdogs in the world. And while these two trade groups are technically non-profit organizations, their top executives are earning big money.

CRN obtained recent 990 tax return forms for both the BSA and SIIA, which includes the total compensation of top executives. The tax records show BSA and SIIA leadership earned significant salaries in 2010. (For more on the BSA and SIIA, see this week's iPad exclusive "The Software Piracy Police: IP Protectors Or Shakedown Artists?")

In the case of the SIIA, top executives actually earned more than the previous year even as the organization's overall revenue declined year-over-year from $10.7 million to $10.4 million. The BSA, meanwhile, reported $62.6 million in 2010 revenue, up from $58.3 from the previous year.

Below is a list of the total compensation, which includes base salary, bonuses, non-taxable benefits and deferred compensation, for the top executives at the SIIA and BSA in 2010.
