The Daily App: America's Economy For Android, iOS3:00 PM EST Mon. Nov. 19, 2012
When it comes to the economy, these days we worry. While there's certainly no shortage of commentary and analysis out there, often times, it's preferable to have a look at the numbers ourselves, which is exactly what today’s Daily App, America's Economy, lets you do. Put out by the U.S. Census Bureau and part of the President's app initiative, America's Economy compiles economic statistics and reports from the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The app provides an updated snapshot of which direction the economic winds are blowing.
The app's interface is simple and easy to understand. The home screen provides a look at the latest numbers like the Gross Domestic Product, International Trade Balance and the all important Unemployment Rate. When a particular statistic is tapped on, a more detailed view appears. This detailed view provides the most pertinent statistics, buttons to blast Facebook, Twitter or email with the potentially gloat-worthy data, and a link to a PDF of the full report. A neat feature is a built-in calendar that shows when the next edition of a particular report will become available. Beyond this, the calendar allows users to add a notice to their own calendar for an upcoming report.
America's Economy, like America's economy, isn't perfect. The calendar seems to be a bit buggy. For example, on both the iPad and Android versions (an iPhone version is available as well) the calendar is simply blank for January. We hope this is an error in the app, rather than an indication that D.C. plans to stop reporting next year.
