Inktomi Corp. is making a push into the wireless market.

The Foster City, Calif.-based Internet software company on Tuesday unveiled a broad initiative to deliver infrastructure software to wireless network operators, Internet portals and global enterprises.

The initiative includes six new alliances to expand its reach into the wireless space. The alliances are with Cap Gemini Group, Paris; Portal Software Inc., Cupertino, Calif.; Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto, Calif.; Sun Microsystems Inc., Mountain View, Calif.; Spyglass Inc., Naperville, Ill.; and GWcom Inc., Santa Clara, Calif.

Inktomi also said it acquired an equity stake in AirFlash Inc., a Redwood City, Calif.-based global application service provider of mobile content and commerce services.

Inktomi Chief Executive David Peterschmidt said Tuesday's action was just the beginning of his company's move into the wireless market. Inktomi was "firmly planting a marker for the future of Inktomi as the global wireless infrastructure provider," he said.CRN
