Rumors Swirl That Wal-Mart Will Sell $99 4-GB iPhone

Save money, live better and get an Apple iPhone for the low, low price of $99? Whether that's fact or wishful thinking, news that Wal-Mart will sell the 4-GB Apple iPhone at the rock-bottom price is causing a buzz.

While it can't confirm the story, Boy Genius Report broke the news Thursday after it said it got a tip about the deal, and said that the deeply discounted 4-GB iPhone will require a two-year agreement. The Web site warned that readers should take the rumors with a grain of salt.

Back in October, the site also cited unnamed sources who said 3G iPhone models would be sold at the discount retailer around Dec. 28. Wal-Mart workers are also reportedly getting trained on the phone's activation. Wal-Mart has remained mum and has not confirmed those rumors.

Apple initially sold the 4-GB model at the hefty price of $399 but later discontinued the phone.

Wal-Mart has gotten more aggressive in selling high-end devices. The store also began selling the T-Mobile G1 in late October, just a week after it was released.

Wal-Mart sells the phone at a consumer-friendly price of $148.88, $31.11 off the $179.99 price T-Mobile USA charges in its brick-and-mortar stores and online. The Wal-Mart discounted models also require users to sign a two-year contract with T-Mobile.
