You might be able to afford to put a Sony PlayStation3 or Microsoft Xbox 360 under the tree this year. Prices for the bestselling gaming systems will reportedly be slashed sometime this fall.

Word of the rumored price cuts comes from the Web site Ars Technica which cited an anonymous source.

The Web site theorizes that Sony has only two months of inventory left before the 80-GB PS3 model is sold out, leaving the160-GB model to take its place. That model will supposedly get a price cut to make room for the PS3 Slim, which is expected to be released this fall.

On the Microsoft front, the Xbox 360 Pro will be discontinued in July or August. As an incentive to move models, Microsoft will reportedly release some enhanced game bundles. The source also told the site that price cuts are coming as well.

"The Elite units, with the 120-GB hard drive, are going to become the Pro-level system after an early September price cut. We'll be on the lookout for another holiday bundle as well, and that should hit around October," said Ars Technica.
