Three New Tech Books

Three new books in the mail: "Querying XML", "JavaScript, The Complete Reference" and "Python: Essential Reference".

Python: Essential Reference (3rd edition) by David Beazley
First off, it's a good looking book, with a photo of Scotland's Dounce Castle on the cover. VAR Research manager Marilyn O'Hara saw it on my desk and thought it was a novel, and indeed, if you took the word "Python" off the cover and replaced it with "Ulysses", it'd still look just right. (I'm not crazy about the typewriter font for some interior headings, but that's a quibble.) It begins with a Python tutorial, and then covers the language elements in detail. The bulk of the book covers Python library components.

Querying XML, by Jim Melton and Stephen Buxton
Starts off with an introduction to XML and then goes though working with the various XML tools and standards. A sample movie database provides concrete examples throughout the book. On a side note, it's coated paper makes it surprisingly heavy!

JavaScript, The Complete Reference (2nd edition) by Thomas Powell and Firtz Schneider
I'm planning on spending the most time with this book, as it's my top candidate for the comprehensive, up-to-date JavaScript reference I've been looking for. What appealed to was it's early chapter on regular expressions, a particular interest of mine, as well as it's emphasis on language basics, rather than tricks with graphics and windows. (And a good price at the tech book discounters helped, too!) I'll let you know.
