Channel Chatter: Best Forums, June 22, 2006The forums have been active since our last check in, with active threads on the gray market, Best Buy, Windows vs Linux, and more: In discussing HP CEO Mark Hurd's efforts to fight gray-market reselling, ChannelWeb member Tracy observes: "I am not a reseller that "doesn't get it" and know that our profit and margin comes from services. However, I have to at least cover overhead and cost to manage the transaction to "pass through" HP product." In the thread on Best Buy vs. VARs, Sleekcom sees reliability issues with many direct products and suggests: "You may miss the first sale, but you can bet your britches you will get the second one and once they buy from you repeat business is a breeze." But the most commentary has been on the CRN Test Center's evaluation of Microsoft Vista vs. SUSE Linux. "There is always some accounts system client or industry specific app that just has no linux alternative." gafischer: "Frankly, I'm not particularly anxious to make it "one click easy" for employees to install downloaded, pass-around, outdated or "borrowed" software on company machines, so Vista's one supposed advantage over Linux may actually be a detriment." Africangraham: " I am using CrossOver Office to run Windows applications on my Linux Desktop, which is really cool" Posted by Joe Caponi at 11:02 AM, June 22, 2006 This is a public forum.
