Gladwell and the VARBusiness 500 AwardsTowards the end of my college days, I met a friend of a friend named Shred. Shred was affable and witty, and what's stuck with me was this one line of his: "The best plan of attack is no plan -- because then you don't have to think." Malcom Gladwell would have known exactly was Shred was talking about. At last night's VARBusiness 500 Awards, Gladwell, best selling author of "The Tipping Point" and "Blink," extolled the virtues of that instant judgement, based on a lifetime of experience, that can out-do the deepest analysis. I covered the speech over on VARBusiness: "Core to what it means to be successful," Gladwell said, is a quality the French call "coup d'oeil"--the ability to size up a situation at a glance and unconsciouslessly make the right decisions and act on them. This ability comes from working through similar situations hundreds of times, developing an expert skill that frequently operates without explainable reasons." Two things about this article: 1) I've covered all five VARBusiness 500 awards keynote speakers: Gladwell, Rudy Giuliani, Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, and economistTodd Bucholtz; and 2) this is the first time I've linked to a nude image online. It was kind of a letdown. Also at this week's VARBusiness 500 Awards: a panel of top solution providers examined eroding profit margins; four roundtables discussed channel conflict, hiring, enterprise purchasing and slowing hardware sales; George Ross, famous as one of Donald Trump's advisors on "The Apprentice" talked about the art of negotiation; and, of course, the VARBusiness 500 awards were presented, including Company of the Year, Executive of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
