Google: Fixing For a Fall?Over on Slate, Glenn Reynolds is anticipating Google's fall: "It made me wonder if Google's position isn't rather vulnerable. People like Google and use it, but its competition -- sites like Ask.com, Dogpile.com, and Clusty.com -- is just a mouseclick away." I use Google for search, of course, and I'm a big fan of Google Maps (they've largely drawn me away from MapQuest). I also use Gmail and the new Google calendar. And this Google spreadsheet is interesting. But Reynolds is right--the cost of switching to a competitor is, well, nothing. And reputations can be made and ruined quickly on the web. Which brings me to Sun. As Ed Moltzen reports, new Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz is offering customers the opportunity to rate Sun's products on Sun's own web site: "Sun has been one of the most open companies in technology in terms of allowing - encouraging, actually - its employees to blog, in allowing reader comments and in realigning its strategy. Of course, that hasn't prevented the company from having to go with a new CEO, reduce its workforce, and work overtime to try to win back investors." But it may be the kind of openness that's needed to succeed on the web. Of course, you can always let us know how you think we're doing, right here and in our forums.
