AstraZeneca plc (ADR) (AZN)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company discovers, develops, manufactures and markets prescription pharmaceuticals for important areas of healthcare: cancer, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, infection, neuroscience, and respiratory and inflammation.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Growth is the new name of the game. Drugs are the old name of the game. AZN is both

I like the MedImmune acquisition but their balance sheet looks like crap- 5billion in cash vs 15billion in debt, plus negative earnings and revenue. Think it will take some time before the MedImmune acquisition starts to pay off

How much lower will this go?
How much more disappointment will come?

The looming recession that bernanke and the whole federal reserve gang have set this country towards will send alot of investors into the pharmaceutical's sector--being the traditional recessionary savior to say the least. Plus, most pharmaceutical stocks have been beaten down this past winter, and I see a reversal across the entire sector. Also, those companies already on a run will continue due to the upward momentum this summer from key reversals and upgrades throughout the sector.

Two words: baby boomers. As boomers age, the drugs made by AstraZeneca will become more necessary. I expect this stock to double in the next 7-10 years. Of course, as new drugs come out and go through their trials with the FDA, or lose their patent protection, the stock will bounce around, generally going higher.

Pharmaceuticals can be risky stocks, but the payoff can be pretty handsome. Go with what you know and make sure you have your information from a reliable source.

This seems like a no brainer, Crestor lowers the inflammation that causes heart attacks, even with patients with normal cholesterol. They halted their study early because the evidence was so strong. I am on it for cholesterol, but what a nice extra beny. The PE is 9 and the dividend is about 4.5%. I know big pharma is having their problems, but that has to be priced in. Long!
