President's Day LinkfestAs we head off into the long weekend, some business and technology links to keep you on top of the channel: Fight the Recession! Bob DeMarzo has some ideas: "Start talking to customers about the slew of new products and technologies on the way from today's major and emerging IT players. And if you haven't already, push your vendor partners hard for support and information so you can have a meaningful discussion with your key customers." Tops among those new products: Windows Server 2008, which our Channel Test Center was pretty impressed with. Steven Burke writes about Apple's Retail Myth: "Michael Oh, founder and CEO of Tech Superpowers, a Boston-based Apple solution provider... is hoping that Apple's new blockbuster Boston store will mean more corporate solutions business will come his way. What Apple needs to do to make that happen is some no-nonsense channel-building." Meanwhile, Gartner projects Apple could double its market share in the next few years. Larry Hooper revisits Dell vs. HP: "Dell has come out with a channel program that has solution providers scratching their heads. Why? It looks good on paper. Of course, there is still mistrust among solution providers, but no one is arguing that Dell's stated intentions are off base." I spoke with Symphony Video founder Andy Covell last week, about his company's Ensemble Video release, which provides distributed video content management. Andy wrote about videoconferencing for me when I was at Network Computing and he knows his stuff. Another person who knows a thing or two about videoconferencing is our own Jennifer Follett, who looks at the future of videoconferencing and sees some cool stuff on the way. One thing we probably don't need: SCO Lives! Aarrgh! Rawrr! Wow, it's like they watched my life and fashioned a job after it: Issues Manager. Crazy like a Fox: perhaps News Corp will help run up the price of Yahoo! Gayle Kesten on Starbucks' roll out of expanded wi-fi capabilities. Why ever go to the office? Next week is the deadline to apply for the VARBusiness 500, our annual ranking of the top solution providers in North America. Don't miss it! And, this weekend, let's raise a toast to our U.S. Presidents, past, present and future! Sure, some of them can be tough to love, but they've all dealt with much bigger problems than you or I would want to, and faced them as best they could. All in all, we've done pretty well.
