It's Not A Job, It's A Profession

Certainly, stuff like network infrastructure configuration knowledge is critical, but without understanding the human side (why exactly, would someone hack your Web site, or why, praytell, might I be vulnerable to a sneak attack) it's kind of pointless.

I'm reminded of that sketch in the Monty Python "Holy Grail" movie (now being replayed onstage in the "Spamalot" production) where King Arthur's knights wheel in the Trojan rabbit (yes, rabbit) as their ploy to storm the French castle and then forget to get inside.

Anyway, this stream of consciousness ramble was brought to you by this little item about a security career guide called "Decoding the Information Security Professional" that the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium published to get high-school and college students interested in the field.

None other than Microsoft is the cosponsor, which I find fascinating.

While you're reading up on whether it's time for a career change, you may as well find out what you're up against. This guide will be useful for those of you who are involved with or are contemplating providing security services to companies in the financial services industry that hand payment processing. This set of compliance rules goes by the catchy name, Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard.

Happy reading!
