Jim Gray, the esteemed Microsoft researcher and database guru, is lost at sea, according to this San Francisco Chronicle report on Tuesday morning.

The 63-year old, who is based in San Francisco, went out alone on his 40-foot sailboat Sunday morning and did not return that afternoon as planned.
Gray is a researcher at the company's eScience group. Gray is particularly well known for his work on databases and other transactional systems.
