Apple Fixes Annoying MacBook Trackpad Glitch

By Kevin McLaughlin, CRN November 18, 2008
Apple, in a move that will help lower the blood pressure of new MacBook owners, has fixed a problem that was preventing the notebook's silky smooth glass trackpad from registering user clicks.

When Apple released its latest MacBooks in October, it also introduced a new glass trackpad that features 39 percent more tracking area and a full-pad mouse button with multi-touch functionality. Some MacBook users reported that the trackpad would inexplicably stop recognizing clicks after an indeterminate period of time, and Apple's Monday release of MacBook Pro Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0 fixes the issue.

The update appears to be working, according to forum posters on the enthusiast blog AppleInsider, some of whom claimed that the trackpad was missing up to half of their clicks before they installed the fix.

"The firmware update went well and seems to have fixed all of those problems, though the cursor freeze one was rare enough that it will take a day or two to be completely sure. But so far, so good," one poster wrote.

"I love how a software update changes the physical reality of your trackpad," wrote another poster.

Earlier this month, MacBook owner Sean Heber emailed Steve Jobs directly to complain about the MacBook trackpad issue, and was surprised to receive a follow-up call from an Apple representative, who informed him the company was looking into the problem.
