The Daily App: Wandering User Transcription For Android

There are a number of quick-and-easy transcription devices for smart phone platforms. Some are pay apps, some are free, many are tailored to custom users in medical or legal fields. Some are merely gateways into pricey, real-world transcription services.

Wandering User Transcription for Android (or W.U.T.), is a snappy, fast and very accurate transcription app that is also free to download. Now in beta format, we tested it out and found it to be very nice for quick dictation that could be used for email or text messaging. (If we tried to speak more than a couple of sentences, the app did turn off and just started transcribing even if we weren’t finished speaking. So it’s not what you’d use to dictate your forthcoming novel).

A big bonus for some: The translation doesn’t just stop at voice-to-text. With a tap of a button, W.U.T. will take a third step and translate the text into American Sign Language by pulling up a photo or a video of a sign-language translator that will communicate to the hearing-impaired as well.
