The Daily App: Google Docs for Android

So it feels a little weird writing on it now as a stand-alone app on a client device while trying to get some work accomplished. But a full look at Google Docs for Android almost forces you to consider different methods of getting the same work done.

With support for all of the features as Google Docs online, it still allows you to create, view, edit and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations and notes, as well as upload photos easily to your Google Docs account. It lets you upload, view and share PDF files and -- this is neat -- take a photograph of a printed document and convert it to text.

Google Docs is a free download from the Android Market, and sets up in a minute or two.

The downside to this app is that it just feels a little awkward out of the gate. We tried it on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and found that viewing and keeping track of documents, spreadsheets, with edits and changes, was powerful. But typing and editing on an Android keyboard just didn’t feel intuitive. This will likely change for the better over time.

Still, if you’ve lived and worked in Google Docs on the desktop or laptop for years, you’re not going to get a better mobile experience on this service on an iPad or iPhone. Google has made this a very functional app for those on-the-go, and it’s worth a try on for Android devices -- particularly tablets.
