The Daily App: LanScan HD for iPad

There are a number of really great iPad apps for managing IT networks, and now we can add another to the list: LAN Scan HD for the iPad.

This app provides a blazing fast way to conduct a quick inventory, and give you a look at which devices are connected to a wireless network. It then permits you the option to drill down by device for information on IP Address, MAC address, NetBios Services and open ports.

We gave it a whirl inside the CRN Test Center lab, and it provided us with a well-organized, easy-to-read display of all the devices attached to our wireless network. Beyond that, it allowed us to run a full port scan on each device - including the wireless router. (Once we ran the port scan on the router, the app provided us with access to the browser-based management console that let us change passwords, re-configure the device, read log files and more.)

LanScan HD is a $6.99 download from the Apple iTunes App store, and was developed by NuTec Network Tools.

This is an app we do recommend for anyone who needs to know what - or who - is connected to the same wireless network as you are and needs a wider view into what's happening on that network.
