The Daily App: SpeedoMeter S54 for iPhone

Ever since the first traffic cop wrote the first speeding ticket, mankind has been working hard to develop tools and practices to avoid being caught violating the speed limit.

Radar detectors, laser detectors – oh, yes, remember CB radios? All have been deployed at some point to outsmart the law. But to date, the only foolproof mechanism is to actually drive the speed limit.

SpeedoMeter S54, a free app from the Apple iTunes App Store with an optional $1.99 add-on, attempts to help protect you from your own lead foot. Developed by Studeo410, this app taps into your device’s GPS functionality to gauge your speed.

SpeedoMeter S54 will monitor your speed in either MPH or kPH. You can tell the app to alert you if you exceed a pre-set speed (up to speeds of 120 MPH.) This makes the app great for longer trips where the speed limit is constant, rather than, say, trips on a back road where the limit changes every few miles.

Once you set the alert, it will send off a shrill beeping noise and provide a red, graphic alert on the device’s screen. The $1.99 add-on to the free app will provide integration with Google maps so you can track your whereabouts at any time.

If driving above the speed limit is a concern, SpeedoMeter S54 will help you address it.
