The Daily App: GV Connect for iPad

Apple’s iPad 2, among other things, is a powerful communication device that can leverage VoIP, video and messaging all in one hand-held tablet.

The problem, though, is that the universe of communication apps that can leverage the capability of iPad 2 is a thin universe. But there are a number that work to extend the functionality of apps like Google Voice on the iOS platform and we like GV Connect for iPad.

A $1.99 download from the Apple iTunes App Store by Andreas Amman, GV Connect combines all of Google Voice’s key functions: SMS, voicemail and – once integrated with a free app called Talkatone – Google-Talk-like voice calling. It works for calls out, and for calls in we found it shot callers right through to our voicemail.

For the most part, GV Connect brings Google Voice’s “virtual receptionist” qualities directly to your iPad 2 without sacrificing what Google Voice provides on a PC. Working as it does with Talkatone actually goes where Google itself has not yet gone. (Which makes us wonder why Google doesn’t just combine the features of both and provide an app of its own.)

The iPad 2 platform is ready, willing and able to support great communication apps. Let’s hope we start seeing more of them.
