The Daily App: Line2 for Android, iOS

Adding a second line to an employee's own smartphone is a simple solution to the BYOD problem; mobile execs can continue to use their own device while keeping company business separate. Offering a free-to-try solution for Android and iOS is Line2, a free app from Toktumi that provides hosted PBX solutions for business.

As its name implies, the Line2 service establishes a new, second phone number that's linked to a mobile device through its Wi-Fi and/or 3G/4G service. Calls or text messages placed to that number are only routed through protocols, while calls to the device's primary number are unchanged. To prevent data charges from piling up, the 3G VoIP only turns on if the user is not in a Wi-Fi area.

What sets Line2 apart is its call waiting feature. Users can switch between a regular call and a Line2 call by putting one or the other on hold; it even has the ability to merge the two into a conference call over the Internet. Another feature provides users with the convenience of linking their contact list, showing which contacts have a Line2 account and which don’t.

The free app lasts for 30 days, and it includes Line2-to-Line2 calling, allows texts and voicemails to be received from everyone, and permits outbound calling to toll-free numbers and international calls. After 30 days, users must choose a subscription, starting with the pay-as-you-go plan for $9.95/month, which includes calling and texting with those who do not have Line2, unlimited calling and texting in the U.S. and Canada with any phone, and much more.
