The Daily App: GateGuru for Android, iOS

Airports are a frenzy of information for flights, ground transport and baggage coming to travelers from signs, kiosks and announcements. Why then is there so little when it comes to airport restaurants, shops and newsstands?

Today’s Daily App was inspired by a frequent flier frustrated by this effective blackout. After boarding yet another a flight hungry, Mobility Apps founder Dan Gellert in 2009 launched GateGuru for iOS, a free app that gave iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users not only flight information, but real-time feedback on eats, drinks, gifts and other airport services and amenities. There's now also a GateGuru for Android.

GateGuru currently includes complete information about 120 airports, including 94 in the U.S., seven of Europe's top 10 and half of Asia's top 10. More than 25,000 reviews offer opinions and photos from fellow travelers about the quality of food, service, atmosphere and other information, often in real time. The app presents a pleasant and intuitive interface, permits tagging of memorable locations for later reference, and allows pre- and post-security search results to be sorted by food, shops and other services. The app links with Kayak and TripIt travel services as well as Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.
