The Daily App: CCleaner For Mac OS X

We're expanding our coverage here in the Daily App blog to include apps available from respective Mac OS X and Windows App Stores from Apple and Microsoft. We'll remain faithful to mobility, of course, limiting our selections to apps that are most useful while on the road, or that help keep laptops running smoothly.

Today's Daily App is from the latter category, and it was recently listed among the Top 10 Free apps in Apple's App Store. London-based Piriform, makers of the well-known CCleaner for Windows, in April released CCleaner for Mac OS X, providing many of the same features that keep systems lean and mean.

The free disk optimization tool downloads in seconds and presents a simple, three-button interface for locating old, unused and unnecessary files; linking to tools for uninstalling applications, repairing permissions and erasing free space; and options for file deletion and cookie handling. And it's fast. The tool was able to scan and report on a test Mac with 233 GB of data in less than 30 seconds. The tool found and freed hundreds of MBs of hard drive storage. It also can clear browser history cookies to improve browser performance and maintain security.

Updated recently to support Gatekeeper for OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), CCleaner 1.04.148 also can now manage login items and remove unused languages from applications. It's also available in the Mac App Store.
