Why You Should Care: Channel-friendly Data Robotics provides storage technology that is comparable to RAID at a fraction of the cost.

The Lowdown: Data Robotics is trying to put a little razzle-dazzle back into the storage game.

"Our partners can pick up the phone and say have you seen this? Customers then can go on our Web site and see our videos, see how Drobo works," said Malissa King, vice president of North American sales. "We can enable partners to have a phone call with a potential customer that is meaningful vs. one that's on a mundane boring tape sale."

Data Robotics' storage arrays provide the protection of traditional RAID without the complexity or cost. Two products are available: Drobo and Drobo Pro. Drobo Pro, which starts at $1,499, is geared toward more demanding business environments and accommodates up to eight drives; Drobo accommodates up to four. The products keep data safe, increase availability and offer a low total cost of ownership, King said.

Data Robotics BeyondRAID technology frees solution providers from having to determine which RAID level customers need to deploy at the time of purchase. Instead, VARs can create a solution that starts at a price point customers can afford and build up from there. Features include single- and dual-disk redundancy, instant expansion, self-monitoring, data awareness, self-healing and an easy-to-understand visual status and alert panel.

"Traditional RAID has limitations and is expensive. You have to determine what you need in storage when you buy. Drobo lets you start with two drives, and there are four bays that mirror each other," said King. "It's easily expandable. But it's at the right price at the right time when you need it. It's built so the end user can have a great experience. It requires no down time and you don't have to be an expert to use it. Traditional RAID takes eight hours to set up and format. This is five to 10 minutes."
