Apple's Power Play: Dual- And Quad-Core iMacs?

By Brian Kraemer, CRN February 03, 2009
Apple may be preparing to update its iMac line with two new options for customers looking to increase their computing power. But rather than deciding whether to throw down the cash for just a dual-core processor machine, Apple may be preparing to offer both a dual-core and quad-core version of the iMac.

The rumors are being fueled by Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, who released a research note to his customers citing sources within Steve Jobs' operation in Cupertino, Calif.

Wu's assertion is driven by the notice Apple sent to channel partners late last week warning them that there could be a draw-down in the supply of iMacs. Wu believes that is indicative of a product upgrade or refresh.

According to Forbes, Wu's sources have told him that the next refresh of the iMac line of personal computers will include both dual-core and quad-core options for customers looking to beef up their computing power.

The difference in chipsets would create gradient in the iMac market, with the dual-core chip power machine costing less than the quad-core machine.

During its recent earnings call, Apple reported that its desktop revenue fell 31 percent and unit sales slipped 25 percent. Even amid a rough economic climate, releasing two high-powered iMacs at two different price points may bolster Apple's dropping desktop sales.
