Microsoft Tweets About Impending Zune News, Office 2010
Through a new Twitter account, @officethemovie, the company said Monday afternoon that "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune users." Microsoft's Zune MP3 player is the vendor's answer to the Apple iPod.
A follow-up post said, "That's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/[Palm]Pre. :)"
It's unclear whether Microsoft is talking about a much-rumored Zune phone, or creating Zune-like services for existing equipment. The tweets are especially interesting since they come as part of an Office-focused marketing campaign. The Twitter account is linked to a Web site featuring a movie-like trailer for Office 2010.
Two other tweets state that Office 2010 will include Twitter, Facebook and other social networks integrated into Microsoft Word and that Office 2010 will be available for Mac users.
Earlier this year, Microsoft reported a 54 percent drop in Zune revenue, and the company told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that a number of factors had contributed to rough sales. "Everyone knows that the economy is not what it was a year ago, and that is hurting some folks. We are in a position where the category is also shrinking. So I think those are things that affected everybody's sales, including Apple," Zune Director of Marketing Adam Sohn told the Post-Intelligencer in January.
