Skyfire 1.0 Mobile Web Browser Launches

By Brian Kraemer, CRN May 27, 2009
Skyfire has unveiled version 1.0 of its free mobile Web browser that aims to bring a PC-like experience to browsing the Internet on a mobile phone.

Currently, the up and coming mobile Web browser is compatible with Windows Mobile and Symbian-based smartphones, made by companies such as HTC, LG, Samsung, Nokia, Palm and Sony, to name a few. Skyfire is currently working on a version of the mobile Web browser that will be compatible with BlackBerry devices.

The mobile browser is also built to view all dynamic Web pages, including those that use, for example, technology like Flash, Silverlight and Windows Media Player, Ajax and Quicktime. Nitin Bhandari, CEO and co-founder of Skyfire, claims that the mobile browser is the only browser on the market that currently supports all of those platforms.

Skyfire 1.0 is designed to function as a full featured Web browser from a mobile device. To that end, if a user browses Hulu.com, for example, to watch a video, the entire Web site is displayed, not just the video. The same is true of sites like Amazon.com and the New York Times, thanks to Skyfire's support of dynamic Web technologies.

For social networking fans, Skyfire 1.0 is integrated with Facebook and Twitter. Users can set up the browser to automatically share information via SMS or through blended support of Twitter and Facebook.

A predictive search box is also part of Skyfire. The search box is presented as a traditional address bar so users can type in a URL as they would on a PC-based Web browser or enter a search term to look for information.

Rounding out the Skyfire 1.0 experience is zoom feature, similar to the one found in Apple's Safari browser for the iPhone. Users can zoom in and out and scroll on the mobile Web browser quickly and easily.

Skyfire 1.0 is available for download now.
