12-Megapixel Showdown: Samsung Beats Sony Ericsson

By Andrew R Hickey, CRN June 01, 2009
Sorry, Sony Ericsson, but Samsung has stolen your thunder.

Sony Ericsson's dreams of being the first to pack 12 megapixels -- yes, that's a dozen -- into a camera phone have been shattered by the Samsung Pixon12. What's more? Samsung is doing it with a touch-screen.

On Monday, Samsung unveiled the Pixon12 M8910, a 12 megapixel wonder the device maker said would be available later this month in Europe. A release date for the U.S. has not yet been revealed.

The Samsung Pixon12 comes just a week after Sony Ericsson promised a 12-megapixel camera phone with the high-end Satio. Sony Ericsson's attempt at 12-megapixel mastery with the Satio isn't due until the fourth quarter.

Similar in style to the original 8-megapixel Samsung Pixon M8800, which made its debut late last year, the updated Pixon12 M8910 features a 3.1-inch AMOLED touch-screen display and a whopping 12-megapixel camera, a Xenon power LED flash and touch autofocus, which lets the user decide the focal point with the touch of a finger. If that wasn't enough, the Pixon12 also ties in a 28mm wide angle lens and a feature dubbed "smart auto."

The Pixon12 is also a video wunderkind, able to record 720 x 480 pixel videos at 30 frames-per-second. And the HSPA connectivity and built in Wi-Fi makes the device a photo and video powerhouse, enabling it to upload photos and video to social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa and Friendster. Images can be stored on a 16 GB MicroSD card.

Moreover, this camera-turned-phone, or vice versa, packs in additional features like GPS, Bluetooth and an FM radio with RDS. Along with the dual-band UMTS/HSPA connectivity, the Samsung Pixon12 also offers quad-band GSM and EDGE.

Pricing for the Samsung Pixon12 M8910 has not been released.
