Gotcha, Google: Amazon Shipping Kindle DX Soon

By Brian Kraemer, CRN June 02, 2009
The budding e-book cold war between Amazon.com and Google is getting hot. Amazon.com has lifted the curtain on the date that the Amazon Kindle DX will hit the streets, and it is sooner than expected.

Since the original announcement of Amazon.com's e-book reader, competitors have been appearing at every turn, with even the Hearst Company rumored to be building and preparing to launch its own e-book reader. While the Kindle 2 appears to sit on top of the market, the challenge from Google could be very real.

It's hard to understate the weight Google brings to a particular market when it decides to enter it. The search engine giant confirmed yesterday that it plans to launch a partner program for authors to sell digital versions of their books online.

Google plans to build a digital ecosystem that would allow partner authors to release and promote their work on any device with Internet access. This author partner program is in addition to Google's ongoing project to digitize public domain books, which Sony revealed in March will be available on the Sony e-reader for free.

That is some serious competition for Amazon.com and its Kindle and Kindle2. Fortunately for Kindle fans, Amazon.com is firing its own salvo back at Google, revealing that the latest version of its popular e-book reader, the Kindle DX, will begin shipping on June 10.

And Amazon.com expects pretty high demand.

"Pre-order Kindle DX now to reserve your place in line. We prioritize orders on a first-come, first-served basis," Amazon.com said in a statement.

The 9.7-inch display measures just more than one-third of an inch thick and is equipped with 3G functionality. Holding up to 3,500 books, periodicals and documents, the Kindle DX continues to deliver on the functions that have made previous iterations of the device so popular.

The Kindle DX will start $489 and is available to order on June 10 through Amazon.com.
