Hotz first revealed that he had created an app to jailbreak the iPhone 3G S last Friday for Windows users.
"Yes, this is what you've all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it's awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it," Hotz wrote on his blog.
The teen hacker followed up his Windows version of the jailbreak on Saturday with an application that is compatible for Mac users.
According to Hotz, he normally wouldn't make his iPhone 3G S jailbreak app available to the public, preferring to leave it up to other parities. But the Dev Team decided not to post a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0, instead waiting until version 3.1 of the software.
That decision did not sit well with Hotz, who apparently felt that someone needed to produce a jailbreak application of the smartphone sooner rather than later.
"Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats [sic] up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the 'last' hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week," wrote Hotz.
Jailbreaking an iPhone allows the device to run third-party applications that are not supported by Apple and AT&T. An iPhone that has been jailbroken can also function on carriers other than AT&T. However, if something goes wrong with a jailbroken iPhone neither Apple nor AT&T will provide any assistance.
