Yahoo Search Pad Now Taking Notes

By Brian Kraemer, CRN July 07, 2009
Yahoo Tuesday is launching a new feature to make note-taking during Web searches easier for users. The new offering, Search Pad, is an application that automatically takes notes while Yahoo search users are doing research online.

With availability set for later today, Yahoo's Search Pad is aimed at adding value to individual Web users' search experiences by providing a single place to gather information about a search session. The service automatically begins taking notes when a Yahoo user is signed in and appears to be actively searching.

As a user searches the Web, summaries, links and thumbnails of visited Web pages are all aggregated on Search Pad, creating an easy and interactive reference point. Users are not limited to just copying and pasting text from Web pages to Search Pad either. Original notes can be written to amend notes and add greater context.

Search Pad also has the ability to analyze information that a user plugs into the application. For example, when a user copys and pastes a paragraph from Wikipedia into Search Pad, the service will scan the information in real time and generate a URL back to the source that can be saved for later reference.

Once information has been gathered on Yahoo's Search Pad, it can be e-mailed to another user with just a few clicks of a button.

Yahoo is rolling out the feature to users in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina later tonight.

Search Pad is the first digital note-taking offering from Yahoo and adds something of a differentiating factor between itself and rivals Microsoft and Google, although Google has been developing an online notebook for some time now.

Yahoo's Search Pad provides an easy way to collect and organize data that is found through search, making it unique in the search engine market.
