It appears as though Amazon.com is looking to deliver ad-supported books and content to its Amazon Kindle e-reader. What's more, it appears Amazon might also be eyeing free or discounted ad-supported e-books for customers who buy physical printed versions.
The U.S. Patent Office has published several Amazon patents in the past 30 days that have led the blogosphere to speculate that Amazon is going in the ad-supported content direction with its beloved Kindle e-reader.
The patent information, uncovered by MediaPost, indicates that one patent filed in December 2006 by Amazon Technologies and granted last month give users who buy a print book a complimentary electronic copy.
MediaPost noted that two additional patents filed by Amazon and published last week indicate Amazon is incorporating targeted advertising in on-demand generated content. Those patents, both filed in December 2007, offer examples for advertising on the Kindle.
According to the patents, Amazon would insert advertisements throughout e-books from beginning to end, between chapters or following every 10 pages, as well as in the margins, MediaPost reported. In addition, a cross-reference feature would add annotations, supplemental reference materials and illustrations, along with the ability to print on-demand paper copies in PDF and other formats.
Those two patents have not yet been approved.
Amazon's move toward bundling e-books with physical copies could be a way for Amazon to ease users into the Kindle e-reader. It's also a way for Amazon to systematically phase out printed materials in favor of their digital counterparts.
Advertising and ad-supported content on the Kindle e-reader and in e-books could also offset the cost of the Kindle hardware itself, enabling Amazon to subsidize the price while Amazon rakes in additional revenue from the ads.
