Price Cut For PS3? Might Not Help.

By Joseph F. Kovar, CRN July 09, 2009
Talk about price cuts for Sony's PS3 gaming console is falling on deaf ears, at least for many retailers of the PS3 and related products.

While the sales reps and managers of many retailers referred questions to their corporate offices, a couple of them said off the record that price cuts would be nice for customers but won't lead to an increase in sales.

One sales rep at a Southern California retailer said Sony PS3 is already selling pretty well, and that pressure on Sony to drop the price is coming from consumers who will buy the gaming system but who don't want to pay $400.

"If there is a price drop, it would be nice to save them money," the sales rep said. "But it won't make customers buy more."

Another retail sales rep in Southern California said that prices for the PS3 have already been cut twice, and haven't helped increase sales. "They always sell the same," the rep said.

The biggest problem with the PS3 is not the price but the relative lack of games, the second rep said.

"We need a better game selection," the rep said. "The Xbox 360 has twice as many games as the PS3 does."
