Spotify Music App Targets iPhones In U.S.

By Michele Masterson, CRN July 27, 2009
The U.K.'s wildly popular Spotify music application is expected to be available in the U.S. on Apple iPhones soon, the company said Monday.

Spotify has developed an application for the iPhone and has submitted it to Apple for approval. If accepted, the application would be available via the Apple App Store.

In addition to the Apple iPhone, Spotify would also be available on Apple' iPod Touch in the U.S., and Spotify is in the process of working on a version for Android-based devices.

"We've finally completed work on the Spotify app for the iPhone and sent it over to the nice people at Apple," said Andres Sehr, Spotify's global community manager, on the company's blog. "Our iPhone version is very similar to the Spotify you're already familiar with and will allow you to listen to your music even when you're not connected to a network. The application should be available in a few weeks for premium subscribers."

Spotify subscribers can legally download songs from the company's music library. Users can also share tunes with their friends and collaborate to create playlists. To use the application, users drag and drop any track, album, artist or playlist to their e-mail or instant messenger account, which creates a link to their favorites that be sent to others who also have Spotify accounts.

Spotify uses a peer-to-peer network along with streaming servers to stream music. It is available on Mac OS X 10.4 or later and Windows XP or later, Wine or Linux platforms.

An advertising-supported version of Spotify is free but it requires that users sign up to register unless they are in the U.K. The application is also available in Sweden, Norway, Finland, France and Spain. Alternatively, music lovers can pay for an ad-free premium subscription for £9.99 (U.S. $16.48) per month or £120.00 a year ($198.000). The company did not say how much Spotify will cost in the U.S.
