Best Buy Sells Palm Pre For $99, Sort Of

By Scott Campbell, CRN July 27, 2009
There is no Palm Pre available at Best Buy for $99. Sort of.

John Bernier, marketing manager at Best Buy, said in his Twitter feed that the $99 pricing was an error. Best Buy stores honored the pricing until it was corrected in Best Buy systems Sunday, he wrote.

"No, price drop was a mistake -- human error corrected today, it's $199," Bernier wrote Sunday.

After reports of a $99 Pre quickly spread across the Web this weekend, Best Buy salespeople weren't the only ones confused by the Pre pricing, which is normally $199. There were several anecdotal reports of the Pre being sold for under $100, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper notes that a New York Best Buy store was selling the Pre for $99 to new Sprint customers or anyone who qualifies for a full two-year upgrade. "We've always sold them, even when it was $199. Right now, people are like, 'Oh, it's $99 now? Even better," a saleswoman told the Journal.

Other New York area stores apparently also offered $99 deals too, while some still had the $199 price, the newspaper said.

On the West Coast, the $99 deal could also be sporadically found and one San Francisco Best Buy salesman said the $99 could be a glitch in the system. "We're not sure if they're going to change it back tomorrow," the salesman told the Journal. A spokesperson at Best Buy could not be immediately reached for comment.
