All is not well in gaming land, as Sony and Nintendo experienced slumping sales of their gaming products.
Sony sold 1.1 million PS3 units compared to 1.6 million units in the year-ago period, while sales of PSP devices also declined, falling from 3.7 million units to 1.3 million units.
In addition, PS3 software sales declined to 14.8 million units from 22.8 million units year over year. The company also saw PS2 software sales decline to 8.5 million units from 19.3 million units.
Meanwhile, Nintendo has its own problems to contend with. The No. 1 game maker reported Thursday that worldwide sales of DS hardware were 5.97 million units in the quarter, down from 6.94 million units in the first quarter of 2008. Nintendo DS software had sales of 20.09 million units, down from 36.69 million units. The company said that while Pokemon Platinum sold well, there were few popular new titles.
As for Wii, console sales fell to 2.23 million units in the quarter from 5.17 million units in the same period a year ago. Although Nintendo said that software titles such as Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii are selling well, the company reported software sales of 3.12 million units in the quarter, a decline from 4.04 million units for the same quarter last year.
