Firefox: Over 1 Billion Served

Firefox, the popular open-source Web browser from Mozilla, officially passed the 1 billion download threshold this morning at 10:00 a.m. EDT and continues to be downloaded at a rate of 23 times every second.

Firefox fans can see the latest download tally at the spreadfirefox.com Web site and the Firefox Twitter site.

For Mozilla, passing the 1 billion mark ends July on an up note. Firefox 3.5 debuted at the end of June and was praised for its privacy capabilities, music and video support, as well as its "Awesome Bar" location bar. But the cheers quickly turned to jeers when users discovered several security flaws and complained of slow load times and other problems.

Mozilla quickly made Firefox 3.5.1 available on July 16 to correct the vulnerabilities.

Mozilla has already been , the latter of which some have noted bears a striking resemblance to Google's Chrome browser.
