Rumored September Apple Event Adds Fuel To 'IPad' Fire

By Damon Poeter, CRN August 14, 2009
Apple will hold a big product event for the media in early September, according to "[m]ultiple music industry sources" cited in an AllThingsDigital report on Thursday. That's news, but not particularly shocking -- Apple has launched new products and product updates around that same time for the past few years -- but add in the growing buzz about a possible 10-inch touchscreen tablet device from the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, and you've got all the ingredients for a rumor mill feeding frenzy.

Highlights include dozens of Web sites with mock-ups of the rumored Apple "iPad" (or "MacBook Touch" as others claim it will be called), as well as several months of rumors out of Taiwan as to who the parts manufacturers for the iPad are -- Wintek is said to be making the multitouch panel; Dynapack is delivering the battery; and Foxconn, builder of iPods, iPhones and Mac Minis, is putting the whole thing together, according to a roundup of rumors by Geek.com.

But our favorite bit of iPad buzz had to be Thursday's post by Gizmodo's Brian Lam that detailed an exchange with a mysterious Apple tablet-handling source presented as the second coming of Deep Throat. The tale, complete with redacted names, spy novel-worthy banter and even personal danger for the reporter as he nearly swerves into traffic at one point, ends with confirmation that the product's code-name "made sense" -- though Lam can't tell us what it is. Or perhaps he could, but then he'd have to kill us.

The flip side is that all good Apple rumors deserve debunking, and for our money, nobody's got a more comprehensive argument against an Apple iPad than IntoMobile's Stefan Constantinescu. Of course, Constantinescu thinks that Apple is really gearing up to release a 10-inch netbook in early 2010, which sort of gets us right back where we started.
