And the rumors of what Sony has planned for the PS3 run the gamut.
Many gaming industry watchers believe Sony will reveal a trimmed down PS3 model with the Sony PS3 Slim console. It's also widely thought that the gaming giant and electronics powerhouse will slash PS3 pricing.
At least one major retailer has confirmed that the PS3 price-drop and a new PS3 are imminent.
Kmart this week launched a banner advertisement on its Web site confirming that the PS3 price-cut "rumors are reality" and that there is a "new low price and a new exciting PlayStation 3." As of this report, the ad was still featured on Kmart's Web site.
Kmart's PS3 slip-up comes amid weeks of rumors that Sony will unveil the PS3 Slim at Gamescon, along with a massive price decrease. It also comes on the heels of retailer FYE cutting Sony PS3 prices by up to $100.
Kmart's ad leak may be a little premature, as industry experts don't expect the new PS3 model to be available for a few months -- just in time for the holiday season. The advertisement also featured an image of the current PS3 console, not the new and exciting one promised.
And while a slimmed-down PS3 and a PS3 pricing purge are the most anticipated items for Sony's Gamescon press conference today, that might not be all Sony dishes -- especially considering the Sony Gamescon press event is expected to last about three hours.
Other PS3 rumors indicate that Sony will launch the new PS3 firmware 3.0 with major new features at Gamescon. Additionally, some gamers expect that PlayStation Home will get a makeover that adds more power and makes it more interactive.
Regardless of what Sony has planned for the PS3 and for Gamescon, it'll be a wild three hours in Germany this afternoon.
