And later, Kmart made good on those promises, sort of.
The discount retailer's Web site featured an incomplete listing for a PS3 Slim for $299.99. The listing indicates the item is available for pre-order and will ship on Aug. 24.
The listing comes just hours after Kmart's Web site featured a banner advertisement confirming that the PS3 price cut "rumors are reality" and that there is a "new low price and a new exciting PlayStation 3."
The Kmart site detailed the PS3 Slim and indicated it featured a 120-GB hard drive and included a DualShock 3 controller. That listing has since been removed.
Several blogs report similar listings popping up on other popular retailers' Web sites, including Sears and FYE. But it was Kmart's two leaks that pushed PS3 speculation to a fever pitch on Tuesday.
The PS3 price cuts and the promise of a new PS3 come as Sony is expected to hold a press conference at the Gamescon conference in Germany Tuesday. Sony has blocked off three hours for its news conference.
Sony has remained tightlipped about what it has up its sleeve for Gamescon, but along with the PS3 Slim and a PS3 price cut, other popular theories include that Sony will unveil the new PS3 firmware 3.0 with major new features and that PlayStation Home will get added power and become more interactive.
