Britannica Gets It

naysaying directed toward Web 2.0,

I suggested Britannica should start embracing Web 2.0 technologies, including developing an RSS feed to begin delivering some of its content.

That prompted an email from Tom Panelas, Britannica's director of corporate communications, who corrected me and noted that the encyclopedia does publish an RSS feed.

Panelas also wrote:

Panelas also said the company is now actively considering "podcasting, Britannica information on mobile phones, and anything else that makes sense. "

If Britannica provides a quality product (information) that it can profitably distribute in an ever-growing number of ways (for example, Web 2.0 technologies), it's one more proof point that the free doesn't have to be the enemy of the non-free. They can and will co-exist.

And it's one more reason to stop doubting Web 2.0.
