Citrix to Bring 'Millions' of Windows Apps to iPhone

By Edward F. Moltzen, CRN December 22, 2008
Citrix is working on technology that would enable "millions" of applications that now run on Windows to work on Apple's iPhone.

Citrix' Chris Fleck, on the company's blog site, writes:

. . . We are actively developing a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone that will bring the world of millions of Windows apps and developers to the iPhone. As part of our testing and demonstrations we are looking for examples of compelling applications that will not run natively on the iPhone, however if the app was hosted on XenApp and delivered to the iPhone it would provide a great visual example of the power of Citrix and the iPhone.

How about starting with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and then moving on to, say, Flash? Fleck also suggests anything that needs Internet Explorer or medical applications, as well, could be part of the effort.

While some at the company have mentioned the effort on various blogs, it's something that Citrix itself still hasn't officially announced.

At first, the idea of millions of new Windows-based applications for the iPhone grabs the attention. And then one realizes that even without Windows support, Apple has still facilitated about 300 million downloads of iPhone applications via its iTunes App Store. And a major piece of Microsoft software - - Exchange - - does work with the iPhone.
