Microsoft's app woes on its mobile platform have been well documented. Windows Phone simply lacks many top apps that have been available on Android and iOS forever. Dropbox is one of those missing apps ... kind of. BoxFiles is a third-party solution for Windows Phone-toting Dropbox users, and it is one of a handful of Windows Phone solutions from Neologics.
Like many apps exclusive to Windows Phone, BoxFiles has a gorgeous, don't-call-it-Metro design. After authenticating the app against your Dropbox account, the app pulls up your existing Dropbox folders. Adding folders is a snap, and BoxFiles ties into the Camera app, allowing you to upload photos with little hassle. It's as simple as that, at least when it comes to viewing and downloading your files. Modifying them is a little bit trickier.
BoxFiles is available in free and paid editions. The basic edition isn't crippled, but it does lack some critical functionality, namely the ability to re-upload modified files. The paid edition adds that missing functionality, works with SkyDrive and subtracts ads.
There are a couple of niggles even with the paid version. Batch downloading of files and photos is unavailable in either version. Also, Microsoft's on-board Office app will upload to SkyDrive, but not Dropbox. This leaves Office and Dropbox power-users stuck with purchasing BoxFiles. Then again, $1.29 isn't a whole lot to ask of a pretty, functional app that accesses two of the most popular cloud storage services.
