(DOCument TYPE) A code in an HTML, XHTML or XML page that informs the Web browser which version of the markup language was used to write the page in order to render it properly on screen. Typically the first line of code in the page, the DOCTYPE points to a Document Type Definition (DTD), which contains the markup rules. See DTD.
