Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, PIM Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients are in a concentrated area, and PIM Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) is more efficient when recipients are scattered. Contrast with DVMRP and MOSPF.
