A smartphone operating system from Microsoft, introduced in 2010. Windows Phone 7 supersedes and is a vast departure from the Windows Mobile platform. Based on Windows CE 6, Windows Phone 7 uses a new touch screen interface reminiscent of Microsoft's Zune music player. A major feature is the integration of social media such as Facebook, Windows Live, etc. without having to open each application to view messages.
Although previous Windows phones never enjoyed the hoopla of the iPhones and Androids, Windows Phone 7 is a complete overhaul of the Windows phone line and is expected to gain much more smartphone market share than previous Microsoft products. See Windows Phone Marketplace and Windows Mobile.
