The plug and socket that provides communications between an iPod and a digital source or destination. The dock connector on an iPod is a socket, and the dock connector on the connecting cable or docking station is a plug (see iPod dock).

Also called an "Apple dock connector," because the same plug and socket is used for the iPhone and iPad, the dock connector is used for downloading music and software as well as listening. However, all Apple products also have a standard 3.5 mm analog jack for earphones, as well as to connect to music systems that do not have dock connectors. See iPod.
