The numbering system used in many European countries that do not speak the English language. Often called the British numbering system, it was used in the U.K. until the mid-1970s, and numbers in older British documents refer to the long scale. In the long scale, a billion is a million millions rather than a thousand millions, which is the "short scale." A trillion is a million billions rather than a thousand billions, and so on. See space/time.
