A programmable CPU chip that is optimized for networking and communications functions. It offers network equipment vendors an off-the-shelf alternative for building routers, switches and access devices much faster than by designing a custom ASIC chip. The network processor is programmed to perform the packet processing supported by the device and is expected to be widely used in all but the highest-end products. MMC Networks coined the term in 1997. See ASIC. See also network computer.
