Google Pack Lays Foundation For Windows-Free PC

software Google

The Google Pack, introduced by Google Guy Larry Page last Friday night in Vegas, includes the Firefox browser, Norton AntiVirus, Adobe Reader 7, Lavasoft's AdAware, as well as Google's own Picasa image editor, Desktop Search, and Google Earth.

Downloaders get the Norton tools for a six month trial.

One early tester noted on his blog, however, that the pack he downloaded had an obsolete version of AdAware. Likewise an old version of Google Earth. His advice to Google: "Try harder next time."

Hmm. What do Adobe, Google, Symantec/Norton, and Lavasoft have in common? Other than a mutual interest in keeping Microsoft from growing its footprint in their markets? Not too much.

No StarOffice or OpenOffice in sight though.

Funny, wasn't the world expecting Google chief Eric Schmidt and his pal Sun Chairman Scott McNealy to work out a joint StarOffice push vs. the Microsoft Office behemoth.

Hmmmm. Maybe next month.
