New Linux Inclinations?

XChange Tech Connect

As many of you have read already here on the site, one of the vendors pitching the crowd was Novell, which was talking up the forthcoming version 10 of its Linux enterprise desktop.

Based on the number of hits the story I wrote about their presentation has generated, it's clear that the Vista delay -- and the continued uncertainty -- has made some of you more receptive to discussions about operating system alternatives.

With its history with the VAR channel, this could be Novell's chance to change the dialogue. You'll also be hearing plenty in the next month from Xandros, which is prepping the launch of its consumer desktop in mid-June (to be followed in September by the business edition) and Red Hat, which has desktop aspirations of its own plus an ambition to connect with VARs and other solution providers aside from its traditional ISV supporters.

To finish the thought, LinuxWorld Expo in August should offer a different take on the market than in years past. For those of you who have been reluctant to mix with the rather cultish set of Linux devotees, the conference this year will offer a half-day exploration of specific opportunities for the Linux channel hosted by yours truly. If you're open to talking, you might consider lending an ear to this event. Stay tuned to the link about for more details.
